In this episode, you’ll meet:
Beth, 49, Pittsburgh PN
Beth had spent 30 years dieting and feeling bad about her body. She says, “I didn’t realize how all consuming thinking about my body and appearance were. It sucked the life out of me.”
She chronically body checked, avoided going for walks in the neighbourhood and used to hide her body at work because she was nervous of being judged.
When we started working together, she had enough with fighting against her body. She says, “I’m cresting towards 50 and I don’t want to do this anymore.”
Through the coaching and community support in You, On Fire, she’s come to a place where she says, “I feel like I can be myself. I used to worry about my body and it doesn’t bother me like I used to. I just want to bring myself to what I’m doing versus always wondering what I look like.”
“I feel like I’m living my life now and I love that. I didn’t think it was possible. I want to spend the rest of the years I’m given on this earth doing other things and I feel like that is possible now. That is everything to me.”
“I couldn’t have done this without Summer’s coaching and the group You, On Fire. I can’t put a price tag on it. It’s been life changing for me.”
Kat, 45, Victoria BC
Like most of the people I work with, Kat said, “I don’t remember a time when I felt OK in my body. I felt not good enough and feeling like I had to change to be OK.”
She was self-conscious about eating around others and it would change what she wore and it created a lot of stress in her life.
Prior to working together, she was afraid of the unknown and wondered, “what does it mean to accept my body? Who would I be? What does that look like? Because it was so foreign to me.”
By unpacking what it means to be in a larger body and working with her inner critic to see it as protective, she says, “My relationship with my body is a lot less fraught.”
“I experience more positive feelings being in my body now. I’m more accepting of where my body is at and it’s less of an issue. I’m not thinking about it as much. I’m not worrying about it as much. I notice joy in eating food now and guilt is gone.”
“It’s so liberating. Getting mental and time space back. I feel freer and emotionally lighter and happier. It’s pretty amazing.”
Rebecca, Brooklyn NY
Rebeccas had been struggling with her body and specifically fixating on her stomach since she was 6 years old. She says, “Nothing felt right with my body. I had such a distorted perception of my body. My whole life had been built on this idea that you had to diet.”
Before we worked together she had been on a restrictive diet for a couple of months and when it “didn’t stick,” she realized she couldn’t do this anymore and wanted to make a change.
She read all the books, immersed herself in changing her beliefs, changed her social media, got clear on her values and moved away from objectifying - this all created a huge shift for her.
Since working together she says, “The biggest shift is that my inner critic is a lot less mean. I don’t find myself engaging in that criticism. If I don’t like how I look, I can just move on… I can’t believe I can actually do that. It’s a huge weight off my shoulders.”
“My disposition has changed so much. I’m much less anxious and am much more engaged with work and my relationship. I’m not in my head all day. It’s so liberating to not have to deal with that.”
“I feel like a different person. It’s such a difference from where I was before. I have regained a huge amount of mental space in my mind. It really feels weightless.”
“I could not have done this without Summer and You, On Fire.”
Arvis, 67, Central Coast, CA
Arvis went on her first diet at 10 years old and from that point on, “her body was never right and I needed to make sure it stayed thinner.”
She was on and off diets for almost 50 years and by the time she got to her late 50’s she thought, “I can’t do this anymore.” While she stopped actively dieting, she still had the diet mentality.
She finally discovered IE in April 2020 and that led her on this path where she knew she wanted to work on her body image.
The biggest fear she had before diving in was fear of being judged by others. She didn’t want to be perceived as the failure or the one that “let herself go.”
She really appreciated the group aspect of the program and that it wasn’t about “loving your body. She now says, “I don’t get any of these horrible emotions (sadness, anger, fear, etc) about my body anymore. I don’t ever tell myself that there is something wrong with me.”
She’s focusing on gentle nutrition now and is able to do this without triggering the diet mentality. She’s able to focus on health from a totally different perspective. She saw friends she hadn’t seen in 3 years and wasn’t afraid of what they were thinking.
She says, “It’s a sense of freedom. I don’t have any cravings. I don’t have any rules. There is no worry or anything. It’s just nothingness, which I think is supposed to be nirvana.”
“It’s the freedom that is so wonderful. All that pain and anxiety is not there anymore.”
Ready to cultivate your inner, rampant untameability (YES!!!) so you can wear, say and do what you want? Let’s discover You, On Fire>>
